EU ESG Disclosure Regulations

The European Union’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) requires companies meeting certain thresholds to disclose sustainability information in line with the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS). The requirements apply to many EU-based companies as well as non-EU companies with significant operations in the EU.

Organizations subject to CSRD are required to evaluate and disclose material sustainability-related impacts, risks, and opportunities (IROs) through a double materiality (DMA) assessment process. CSRD reporting may also require disclosure of Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions, governance practices, climate-related targets, transition planning, and broader environmental, social, and governance (ESG) topics, depending on applicability and materiality determinations.

CSRD reporting requirements are being implemented in phases and may continue to evolve through additional European Commission guidance, member state implementation measures, and omnibus regulatory updates.

Organizations subject to CSRD may also need to evaluate alignment with the EU Taxonomy Regulation, including the assessment of eligible and aligned economic activities associated with the following environmental objectives:

  1. Climate Change Mitigation
  2. Climate Change Adaptation
  3. Sustainable Use and Protection of Water and Marine Resources
  4. Transition to a Circular Economy
  5. Pollution Prevention and Control
  6. Protection and Restoration of Biodiversity and Ecosystems

Additional ESG Disclosure Requirements

IFRS S1 and S2 are the first sustainability disclosure standards issued by the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB). IFRS S1 requires businesses to disclose information about sustainability-related financial risks and opportunities that may affect the business. IFRS S2 is a topic-based standard that requires disclosures about the entity’s exposure to climate-specific risks and opportunities. The IFRS S1 and S2 standards are designed to be used together.

Multiple countries, including Australia, Canada, China, Japan, New Zealand, and Singapore, are either in the process of requiring disclosures or have already required disclosures aligned with IFRS S1 and IFRS S2.

Our IFRS S1 and S2 Consulting Services include:

  • Greenhouse Gas Inventory Calculation
  • IFRS S1 and IFRS S2 Disclosure Preparation
